Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Self-Massage
A warm-oil self-massage is one of Ayurveda's most loved daily rituals — grounding, nourishing and deeply calming.
Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of massaging the body with warm oil, traditionally done before bathing. It's said to nourish the skin, calm the nervous system, support sleep and ground the mind. A simple, soothing ritual you can do at home in a few minutes.
Abhyanga (from the Sanskrit for 'oil massage') is a cherished part of dinacharya, the Ayurvedic daily routine. Warm oil is massaged into the whole body — long strokes on the limbs, circles on the joints — ideally before a warm shower or bath, giving the oil time to absorb.
It's traditionally used to nourish the skin, ease tension, calm the nervous system and support restful sleep. Sesame oil suits Vata and cooler weather; coconut oil suits Pitta and warmer weather. Even a few minutes on the feet and scalp before bed can be wonderfully grounding.
Keep it simple and gentle. Warm the oil, take your time, and let the ritual be as calming for the mind as it is for the body.
How to practise abhyanga, with Pooja Vassal
Pooja Vassal describes abhyanga as an age-old practice of massaging the body with warm oil to nourish and calm. A practical cue from her: use a measured amount of oil rather than piling it on — the point is gentle, mindful massage, not excess.
