Prakriti & Vikriti: Your Ayurvedic Constitution
Ayurveda distinguishes who you are by nature from how you are right now — and that difference is the key to balance.
In Ayurveda, prakriti is your natural constitution — the unique balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha you were born with — while vikriti is your current state, which shifts with life, season and habits. Understanding both shows you where you've drifted out of balance and how to return, tailoring food, routine and yoga to you.
Ayurveda's most personal idea is that each of us has a unique constitution. Prakriti (your nature) is the balance of the three doshas you were born with and carry for life. Vikriti (your current state) is how those doshas are balanced right now — which changes with age, season, stress, food and lifestyle.
Why the difference matters
Health, in Ayurveda, is your vikriti matching your prakriti — being who you naturally are. Imbalance is when your current state drifts away from it: a naturally calm Kapha person feeling anxious and dry (excess Vata), or a steady Pitta feeling inflamed and irritable (excess Pitta). Naming the drift shows you what to rebalance.
Finding your way back
Once you know your prakriti and can sense your vikriti, the path is clear: reduce whatever dosha is currently in excess with opposite qualities, while honouring your underlying nature. This is why generic advice often misses — the same food or practice can balance one person and unbalance another.
An Ayurvedic practitioner can assess both properly. But even a rough sense of 'my nature' versus 'how I am lately' is a powerful lens for choosing what will bring you back to balance.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between prakriti and vikriti?
- Prakriti is your natural constitution — the dosha balance you were born with. Vikriti is your current state, which shifts with life, season and habits. Balance means bringing your vikriti back toward your prakriti.
- How do I find my Ayurvedic constitution?
- Your prakriti shows in your lifelong build, temperament and tendencies. Quizzes give a rough guide, but an Ayurvedic practitioner can properly assess both your natural constitution (prakriti) and current imbalance (vikriti).
- Why doesn't the same diet work for everyone?
- Because each person has a different constitution. The same food or practice can balance one dosha and aggravate another, so Ayurveda tailors food, routine and yoga to your prakriti and current state.
