Hatha yoga is the branch of yoga that works with the physical body through posture (asana) and breath (pranayama). Most modern yoga styles descend from it. In class, 'Hatha' usually means a slower, gentler practice that holds poses steadily — a good, accessible starting point for learning alignment and breathing.

Traditionally, 'Hatha' refers to the whole physical, breath-based path of yoga, described in texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. In that sense Vinyasa, Iyengar and Ashtanga are all forms of Hatha yoga.

In a modern timetable, a 'Hatha' class typically means a slower-paced practice: you move into a pose, hold it for several breaths with attention to alignment, then move on. That measured pace makes it especially welcoming for beginners learning the foundations.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hatha yoga good for beginners?
Yes. Its slower pace and steady holds make it ideal for learning alignment, breathing and the basic poses safely.
What's the difference between Hatha and Vinyasa?
Hatha classes are generally slower with held poses; Vinyasa flows continuously, linking poses with the breath at a quicker pace.
