Vinyasa yoga is a flowing style that links poses together with the breath in continuous, dance-like movement. 'Vinyasa' means to place in a special way, and each movement is paired with an inhale or exhale. It builds strength, stamina and heat, and classes vary widely in pace and creativity from one teacher to another.

Rather than holding poses one at a time, Vinyasa strings them into sequences where you move on each breath — for example flowing through a Sun Salutation. This continuous, breath-led movement gives the practice a rhythmic, meditative quality.

Because it keeps moving, Vinyasa builds cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility, and generates internal heat. No two classes are quite alike, since teachers design their own sequences — which keeps it varied but can be faster than beginners expect.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vinyasa yoga good for beginners?
It can be, with a beginner-paced class, but the continuous flow is more demanding than Hatha. Learning basic poses first helps you keep up safely.
What's the difference between Vinyasa and Ashtanga?
Ashtanga follows a fixed set sequence every time; Vinyasa is freer, with teachers creating varied flows each class.
