Easy Pose (Sukhasana)
Sukhāsanaसुखासन· soo-KAH-suh-nuhcomfortable or easy posture (sukha = ease)
Sukhasana is the simple cross-legged seat — an easy, comfortable alternative to Lotus for meditation and breathwork. It's ideal for anyone with knee issues who can't sit in Lotus or Thunderbolt, gently opening the hips and lengthening the spine.
Step by step
- 1
Cross the legs
Sit down and cross the legs comfortably, placing each foot beneath the opposite knee so the shins cross simply.
- 2
Settle the base
Ground evenly through both sitting bones. If the knees are high or the back rounds, sit up on a cushion or folded blanket.
- 3
Lengthen the spine
Lift tall through the crown of the head, relax the shoulders down, and rest the hands on the knees or in the lap.
Breath: Slow, natural breath
- 4
Rest and breathe
Soften the face and breathe easily. Swap the cross of the legs from time to time so both sides share the work.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Sukhasana good for people with knee problems?
- Yes — it's a comfortable seated option for those who can't manage Lotus or kneeling in Thunderbolt. Sitting up on a cushion makes it easier still and protects the knees and lower back.
- Why sit on a cushion in Easy Pose?
- Lifting the hips above the knees tilts the pelvis forward, which lets the spine lengthen naturally and keeps the lower back from rounding — much comfier for longer sits.
