Panchakarma: Ayurvedic Cleansing & Renewal

Ayurveda's deepest cleansing therapy isn't a juice fast — it's a structured, guided process of renewal called panchakarma.

Panchakarma ('five actions') is Ayurveda's classical deep-cleansing and rejuvenation therapy — a structured, professionally-guided programme to clear accumulated toxins (ama) and rebalance the doshas. It combines preparation, cleansing therapies and careful rebuilding, done under expert supervision. This is an overview; true panchakarma is undertaken with a qualified practitioner.

Panchakarma — literally 'five actions' — is Ayurveda's most thorough cleansing and rejuvenation therapy. Far from a quick detox, it's a structured programme, traditionally done over days or weeks under expert supervision, to clear deep-seated toxins (ama) and restore balance to the doshas.

The three phases

Classically it has three stages: purvakarma (preparation) — softening and loosening toxins with oil massage (abhyanga) and herbal steam; pradhankarma (the main cleansing actions) — therapies chosen for the person, which may include therapeutic purgation, medicated enema (basti), nasal cleansing (nasya) and others; and paschatkarma (aftercare) — a gentle, gradual rebuilding of digestion and strength with careful diet and routine.

Who it's for

Panchakarma is used both to address imbalance and as seasonal renewal. Because it's powerful and individualized, it must be done with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who assesses your constitution and needs — it is not a self-administered home cleanse.

At home, the spirit of panchakarma lives in gentler habits — self-massage, light eating, and clearing ama through good digestion. The full therapy itself belongs in expert hands.
