Om (Aum) is chanted because it's considered the primordial sound of the universe and a way to settle and focus the mind. Its long, steady vibration lengthens the exhale, calms the nervous system, and marks a shift into a more inward, meditative state — which is why classes often open or close with it.

Om is described in the Upanishads as the essential sound from which all others arise. Chanting it draws the attention inward and gives the practice a calm, shared starting or ending point.

Practically, the long humming exhale of Om slows the breath and soothes the nervous system, much like a simple breathing practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Om religious?
Om has roots in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions, but in a yoga class it's used mainly as a focusing, calming sound; you can chant it or simply listen.
How do you chant Om correctly?
Take a full breath and let the sound move slowly through 'A-U-M', ending in a soft humming — long, steady and relaxed.
