Yoga and Pilates both build strength, flexibility and body awareness, but differ in focus and roots. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice combining postures, breath, meditation and philosophy for whole-body and mental wellbeing. Pilates is a modern exercise system focused mainly on core strength, control and posture. Yoga is broader; Pilates is more targeted.

The two look similar on a mat and share benefits — strength, flexibility, control and body awareness — which is why people often compare them. But their aims and origins differ.

Yoga is thousands of years old, from India, and integrates posture with breathwork, meditation and a philosophy of living — it works with body and mind together. Pilates, developed in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates, is a focused physical system built around core strength, control, alignment and posture. Choose yoga for a broader mind-body practice, Pilates for targeted core and control work — or enjoy both.

Frequently asked questions

Is yoga or Pilates better for core strength?
Pilates is specifically designed around core strength, control and posture, so it's very effective there. Yoga also builds core strength, alongside flexibility, balance and mental calm — so the 'better' one depends on your goal.
