Day 7 · Beginner journey
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
The journey completes at the Sahasrara, the Crown chakra at the top of the head. This is the centre of meditation and the deepest aim of yoga — the ability to sit quietly, for a long time, in stillness. Today you'll rest in a comfortable seated posture and simply meditate.
The Crown chakra sits at the very top of the head. It is worked with through meditation — and, in a sense, the whole physical practice of yoga prepares the body to sit comfortably and still for long enough to meditate deeply. This is traditionally where the deepest states of yoga are said to unfold.
Follow the video into a comfortable, tall seated posture and settle into meditation, keeping the spine upright and the body relaxed. Let the attention rest lightly at the crown. The theme of Day 7 is stillness — and drawing the whole week together.
Today’s practice
- Find a comfortable, tall seated posture
- Settle the body and let the breath become quiet
- Follow the video into a period of meditation
- Take a moment to sense the whole chakra system, base to crown
Reflection
Having travelled from the Root to the Crown this week, which centre most wants your attention now?
Video transcriptIn this closing session of the seven-day series, the teacher explains the Sahasrara (crown) chakra, its link to meditation and samadhi, and recaps all seven chakras covered.
Om Namah Shivaya. Welcome to Yoga & You. We are here today at 136.1 yoga studio.
Today we'll cover the Sahasrara Chakra, the Sahasrara Chakra located at the crown of the head. And you must remember that yoga, the main aim of yoga, is to be able to sit in this position. And we sit in this position so that we can sit for hours and meditate and activate the chakra, which is right at the top of the head. And this is where the great yogic masters have managed to attain, and they've managed to reach samadhi by activating this chakra for us, which is dormant in us.
What we can do is meditate, and there are certain points which you need to keep in mind while meditating, is to try and sit in that position even if it's three minutes, just try and sit in that position and not try and fight with yourself. You know, whatever thoughts come through your head, let it just pass through, and slowly, with every day that passes, you'll be able to sit for a little longer and understand yourself a little more.
Okay, so we've covered the seven chakras, starting with the Muladhara Chakra, the Swadhisthana, the Manipura, the Anahata, Vishuddha, Ajna, and Sahasrara. You must remember that chakras and asanas is a very deep topic, and what we have done is given you basic understanding and taught you the basic asanas to keep these chakras balanced and your emotions and yourself happy.
