The Story Behind Bow Pose

The mythology, meaning and legend behind Bow Pose.

Watch: Dhanurasana Secrets Revealed | Bow Pose Story & Symbolism

Dhanurāsana, Bow Pose, takes its name from the shape it makes rather than from a single legend: dhanu means “bow,” the archer’s bow. In the posture the body becomes a drawn bow — torso and thighs curving like the bow’s arch, arms pulled straight like its taut string.

Unlike some poses, Bow Pose carries no one mythological hero. Its meaning comes from the image itself. The bow is a powerful symbol across Indian tradition — Rama’s great bow in the Rāmāyaṇa, or Arjuna’s Gāṇḍīva in the Mahābhārata — an emblem of focus, readiness and drawn potential.

That symbolism suits the pose. A bow is only useful when it holds tension with control: too little and it is slack, too much and it breaks. Dhanurāsana asks for the same balance — a strong, energetic backbend held with steadiness and an even breath.

As you lift, feel the whole front body stretch open while the back body engages, the arms drawing the legs like a bowstring. It is a pose of gathered energy — alert, springy and poised, like an arrow waiting to be released.

In practice, warm the spine first, then lift into Dhanurāsana with control rather than a heave, drawing the legs into the hands like a bowstring and breathing steadily against the stretch. Release slowly. Held with that balance of tension and ease, the bow builds a strong, supple back.
