Tāḍāsana, Mountain Pose, takes its name from tāḍa, “mountain.” It looks like simply standing still — which is its secret: the steadiness of a mountain is far harder to embody than it appears.

The story told behind this pose is that of King Bhagīratha, whose ancestors had been reduced to ash and could find no peace. To free them he undertook years of unwavering penance, standing motionless in tapas — still as a mountain — until the sacred river Gaṅgā at last agreed to descend to the earth.

That is the quality Tāḍāsana cultivates: to stand rooted and unmoving yet fully alive — feet grounded, spine long, crown lifting, weight even across both feet. Nothing dramatic shows on the outside, while a great deal of quiet attention is at work within.

Every standing posture begins here. To find Mountain Pose is to find your centre line and your foundation, and the “advanced” work is simply the steady presence that keeps you tall and still — like a mountain that needs no movement to be powerful.
