Early morning, on an empty stomach, is traditionally considered the best time for yoga — the mind is calm and clear, and it sets a positive tone for the day. But the best time is really whenever you'll practise consistently. Energising practice suits mornings; gentle, calming practice suits evenings.

The short answer: early morning is the classic ideal, but the truly best time is whichever slot you can practise consistently. Tradition favours the quiet hours around dawn, before breakfast, when the mind is fresh and the stomach empty, and a session then sets a calm, clear tone for the day ahead. If mornings genuinely suit you, they are hard to beat.

It depends on your body clock, schedule and goals. A morning practice tends to energise and mobilise a stiff, just-woken body, so it pairs well with flowing, warming sequences and Sun Salutations. An evening practice is better for unwinding: slower, restorative poses, gentle forward folds and long exhales help release the day's tension and prepare you for sleep. Midday works too if that is your only realistic window.

The one firm rule across every time slot is digestion. Leave roughly two to three hours after a full meal, or about one hour after a light snack, before practising — a loaded stomach makes twists, folds and inversions uncomfortable and can cause nausea. If you practise first thing, a glass of water or a very light bite is usually enough.

A common mistake is chasing the 'perfect' hour and then skipping practice when it slips. Ten minutes at a time you'll actually keep beats an ideal dawn session you keep missing. Match the intensity to the hour — vigorous when you want to wake up, gentle when you want to wind down — and let consistency, not the clock, drive your progress.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to do yoga in the morning or evening?
Morning practice energises and sets the day's tone; evening practice unwinds and aids sleep. Both are good — match the style to the time, and choose whichever you'll do consistently.
