Yes — yoga is traditionally and best practised on a fairly empty stomach, which is why early morning is ideal. An empty stomach makes twists, folds and inversions comfortable, helps you feel light and focused, and avoids nausea. If needed, a small light snack an hour before is fine.

An empty stomach is part of yoga tradition and simple practicality: the abdominal work of twisting, folding and inverting feels much better without a full belly, and the mind is clearer for breathing and meditation.

This is why dawn — before breakfast — is the classic time to practise. If you can't manage on empty, a small, easily-digested snack (banana, dates, a few nuts) 30–60 minutes beforehand is a good compromise.

Frequently asked questions

Why is morning yoga done before eating?
Because an empty stomach makes the twisting and folding of yoga comfortable and the mind clearer for breathing and meditation. A small snack beforehand is fine if you need it.
