A yoga bolster is a firm, supportive cushion used mainly in restorative and gentle yoga. It props the body so you can fully relax in a pose — supporting the back in a reclined position, under the knees, or beneath the chest in resting poses. It lets muscles release completely without effort or strain.

A yoga bolster is a firm, supportive cushion used mainly in restorative and gentle yoga to hold your body in a pose so you can fully relax. Instead of your muscles doing the work of maintaining a shape, the bolster takes the effort, letting you rest in a supported position for several minutes at a time without strain.

Its uses are wonderfully varied. Placed lengthways under your spine in a reclined pose it opens the chest and shoulders while you rest; tucked under your knees it releases the lower back as you lie down; laid across your thighs it supports a seated forward fold you can simply melt over; and it can prop the hips or side-body in gentle twists and side-lying rest.

The point of all this support is what happens to your nervous system. When a pose costs you no effort, the body reads it as safe, the breath slows, and you can settle into a much deeper state of relaxation than active poses allow. That is exactly why bolsters are central to restorative practice, to winding down before sleep, and to supported, comfortable positions in pregnancy yoga.

You do not need to buy one to begin. A firm cushion, a couch pillow, or a few blankets folded tightly into a long, dense roll make a good substitute. Aim for something firm enough to hold its shape under your weight rather than a soft pillow that simply flattens, and you will get most of the same supportive benefit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a pillow instead of a bolster?
Firm cushions or tightly rolled blankets work, though a true bolster is firmer and holds its shape better for full support.
Is a bolster only for restorative yoga?
It is most used there and in prenatal yoga, but it is also handy for comfortable seated meditation and gentle supported stretches.
