Practise yoga on a fairly empty stomach — ideally 2–3 hours after a main meal. If you need something, have a small, light snack (like a banana or a few nuts) 30–60 minutes before. A full stomach makes twists, folds and inversions uncomfortable and can cause nausea.

Yoga involves twisting, folding and compressing the abdomen, so a full stomach quickly becomes uncomfortable — and can cause nausea, cramping or reflux. Traditionally, yoga is practised on an empty stomach, which also helps you feel light and focused.

Aim to leave 2–3 hours after a full meal, or 1–2 hours after something lighter. If you're hungry before a morning practice, a small snack like a banana, a few nuts or a date 30–60 minutes ahead is enough to take the edge off without weighing you down.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do yoga after eating?
It's best to wait 2–3 hours after a full meal (1–2 after a light one). Practising on a full stomach makes twists and folds uncomfortable and can cause nausea.
