Many people notice more flexibility within a few weeks of consistent, gentle yoga, with bigger changes over 2–3 months. It varies with your starting point, age and how often you practise. Little and often — several short sessions a week — builds lasting flexibility faster than occasional deep stretching.
Most people notice they feel looser within a few weeks of regular practice, with clearer, more lasting change over roughly two to three months. There's no fixed timetable, though: flexibility improves gradually and depends heavily on where you start, your age and how often you get on the mat.
Frequency matters far more than intensity. A few short sessions a week — even 15 to 20 minutes — will shift stiff tissues faster and more safely than one long, ambitious stretch. Gentle stretches held for around 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, with steady breathing, give the muscles and connective tissue time to release. Forcing deep stretches occasionally, by contrast, risks strain and can actually set your progress back.
Your starting point sets realistic expectations. If you're very tight, older, or new to movement, early gains may feel small before they accelerate — that's completely normal and not a sign it isn't working. Naturally supple people or those returning to practice often progress quicker. Comparing yourself to others, especially online, is a recipe for frustration and over-reaching.
The common mistakes are impatience and inconsistency: chasing a deep pose in one session, then stopping for a fortnight. Aim instead for little and often, breathe into each stretch rather than bouncing or gritting through pain, and track small wins — reaching a little further, sitting more comfortably. Mild stretching sensation is fine; sharp or pinching pain means ease off. Given consistency, flexibility reliably follows.
